Discord, simplified

Never used it before? This is everything you actually need to know. That's it.

  1. What it is

A chat app — text, voice and video. You hang out in communities called servers. Free, works in a browser or an app.

  2. Servers

The icons down the far left are the servers you've joined. Click one to open it.

The Discord app: a column of server icons on the far left, and that server's channel list beside it.

The Chub Club is one of these. Joining adds it to your list.

  3. Text channels

Anything with a # is a text channel — one room per topic. Click it, type at the bottom, hit enter.

The same channel list with the text channels — the ones marked with a # — highlighted in red.

Supporters get extra channels that other people can't see.

  4. Voice channels

The ones with a speaker icon are voice rooms. Click one and you're instantly in — no calling, no ringing. Click Disconnect to leave.

The same channel list with the voice channels — the ones marked with a speaker icon — highlighted in red.
  5. Screen sharing

Once you're in a voice channel you can share your screen, and watch anyone else who's sharing theirs.

A Discord voice channel where one member is live, with a Watch Stream button next to them.

That's genuinely it.

Everything else you'll pick up as you go.
